Gen 1:26.Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
To rule over someone or something is to serve as the boss or chief over someone or something. And it carries a managerial and serviceaspect, thus a critical component of Stewardship. Amazingly, in Gen 1:26, God made human kind a ruler over everything before man ever came into existence, the beginning of the thought to create man started with man being a steward. God created man not less than a steward. He actually created a steward in the real sense of the word! Human kind is steward by creation. Without exception we are all stewards by creation!
After creation, God pronounced his intentions to man. Vs. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” To subdue is to conquer and put under control. Man was given the power and authority to control that God gave him. This was a command from the divine source.
Vs. 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
It is God who gave first. He gave everything or “all” to man. It’s God that gives.
Gen 2: 8 & 15
Vs. 8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God took the man to the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden.
The genesis of stewardship is in the book of genesis. The critical verses that set the foundation of stewardship in the Holy Scriptures include:- Gen 1: 26, 28, 29, 30 & Gen 2: 15-16.
God created all and man received all. ”Stewardship is all of me in response to all of God”.
